    -American Philosophical Association

Put this in your pipe Jenny McCarthy!

Autism is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social, behavioral and communication abilities. Compared to other complex diseases, which are caused by a complicated mix of genetic, environmental and other factors, autism is highly heritable — roughly 90% of the disorder is thought to be genetic in origin.

Vegetarianism as a gateway to veganism

Posted by vegatee on September 1, 2009

Five of my friends/acquaintances are animal rights activists (four gals, one guy). All are vegan. All, but one, have blogs and write about animal rights. All take a pretty hard line regarding vegetarianism and animal welfare and they do their parts in helping effect change by volunteering, blogging, helping create veg*an communities, and generally leading by example. Three of them disagree with the idea that vegetarianism and/or welfare movements are gateways to veganism and animal rights for those who are inclined to adopt the latter ways of life. Yet, all three have transitioned to veganism via vegetarianism. All three have had periods of time when they regressed to vegetarianism, some on several occasions, before going vegan and sticking with it. So, what gives?

Beacon of democracy?

Posted by vegatee on August 20, 2009

The nation touting itself as the most democratic in the world, a beacon of democracy of sorts, doesn’t make the top 10 most democratic nations list, according to The Economist. The US ranks 18th. This is not bad. In fact, I’d say, it’s pretty darn good. It doesn’t warrant the self-congratulatory, “we’re number 1″, back-patting so commonly encountered in the States, however.

Biology for Christian Schools

Posted by vegatee on August 13, 2009

I had to do a double take as I read the introduction to this “textbook” for biology:

Biology for Christian Schools is a textbook for Bible-believing high-school students. Those who do not believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God will find many points in this book puzzling. This book was not written for them.

The same encyclopedia article may state that the grasshopper evolved 300 million years ago… These statements are conclusions based on “supposed science.” If the conclusions contradict the Word of God, the conclusions are wrong, no matter how many scientific facts may appear to back them.

Science Knowledge Quiz

Posted by vegatee on July 29, 2009

Given the simplicity of the questions on this quiz, I am deeply disturbed by the fact that the vast majority of participants did not get all 12 questions right. What are schools teaching these days?
